Vivian Leonard
Jones
Jun 18, 1939 — Oct 1, 2026
Bedford
Vivian Hortence Leonard Jones was born on June 18, 1939, in Deal Island, Maryland. On October 1, 2026, she answered God's call to come home while at Heritage Green Assisted Living and Memory Care in Lynchburg, Virginia, following a battle with cancer and other health challenges. Affectionately known as "Hoy," Vivian faced pain and suffering with strength and a deep, abiding faith in God. Even through her most difficult days, she spoke of being ready to go home to the "Big Church."
The daughter of the late Arthur and Acquilla Leonard, Vivian, was the youngest of six siblings. She received her education in the Somerset County, Maryland, Public School System and accepted Christ at an early age. After leaving Salisbury, Maryland, Vivian's adventurous spirit led her to Newark, New Jersey where she lived for several years before returning home to Deal Island, Maryland. Then she tried her luck in Syracuse, New York, where she lived briefly with her niece, Veronica. Eventually, having had enough of the northern cold, she moved south to Bedford, Virginia, where she lived with her brother, Winston "Sonny," and sister-in-law, Bonnie. It was in Bedford, Virginia where she met and dated her future husband, Henry O. Jones.
In Bedford, Vivian worked at Linde Claire Sewing Factory and Golden West Foods, forming many lifelong friendships along the way. She continued working until her health no longer allowed it. She also joined Washington Street Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in the usher ministry. After marrying her beloved husband, Henry, she joined Western Light Baptist Church, where she remained a devoted member, attending and serving until her health began to decline. When she could no longer attend church in person, Vivian listened to weekly services by telephone. She also enjoyed watching Jimmy Swaggart and especially loved hearing him sing. Visitors to her home would often find the television tuned to his ministry, Family Feud, or the news.
In her younger years, Vivian loved to sing and dance. Whether or not she could carry a tune or keep the beat, she enjoyed herself—and that was what mattered. She had a gift for working with her hands and could pick crabs with remarkable speed. She was also an excellent cook; her Virginia hams and corn pudding were legendary. Vivian was always willing to lend a listening ear when her family needed her. Known for her faith, kindness, and love of family and friends, she cherished time with those she loved until the very end.
Vivian was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty years, Henry; her son, Victor; her grandson, Victor Jr.; three brothers; and two sisters. Left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-law, Dorothy Jones; her nieces, Faith and Sharlene, whose devoted care and loving presence were a special comfort following her cancer diagnosis; a host of other loving nieces and nephews; and her "bestie," Carol Davis.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Khan of Lynchburg Centra; the Gentle Shepherd hospice team, especially Pam; and the staff of Heritage Green Assisted Living and Memory Care in Lynchburg for their care and compassion.
Vivian called to Jesus, and He answered. "I want to go home to the Big Church," she said. And Jesus welcomed her: "Come home, My child. You have been faithful. Take your rest."
