Deaconess Vera Jane Board Quarles, 96, of Goodview, VA peacefully departed this world to be with the Lord on Monday, March 10, 2025. She was born in Bedford County on February 12, 1929 to William Board and Eliza Swain Board. Vera was the fifth of eleven children.

Vera was educated in the Bedford County School System and Carver Salem High School. She later married Jerome Quarles and together they shared sixty-one years of marriage until his passing in 2007. Throughout their union, they raised three children, supported many other relatives and offered guidance and love to countless others.

Vera was a faithful member and diligent worker at Green Spring Baptist Church. She was always willing to assist with events as needed. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Usher Board, Deaconess Board, Hospitality Committee and later she was appointed Mother-of-the Church. Vera served faithfully until her health declined.

Many have stories of Vera which include: her walking long distances on her road as others followed behind; the old-fashioned homecomings with food she prepared to serve several family members and friends; stories of traveling many miles to different parts of the United States and Canada and stories of how Sister Vera would perform her deaconess duties with dignity and love at her church.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Violet and Freddie Stuart; sister, Nancy Kasey; sisters-in-law, Gracie Board and Betty Board; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
