Sunday evening, July 17, 2011 Sylvia quietly and peacefully made her journey home. She was escorted by the Angel into the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sylvia was born to Rosa B. Johnson and the late William (Bill) Johnson on March 16, 1939 in Bedford, Va. Sylvia was educated in the public schools in Bedford County, Va. She enjoyed taking piano lessons and eventually played piano for recitals and local churches. Sylvia was united in holy matrimony to John (Bobby) Butler of the Otterville Community of Bedford, Va. This union was blessed with five children. In the early 1960's, Sylvia and Bobby relocated to New Rochelle, New York. Sylvia was a dedicated stay-at-home mom until their youngest child reached school age. She was then employed at several electronics companies until returning to Bedford to be near her mother, other family members and friends. Sylvia enjoyed family outings, entertaining, traveling and was a loving foster mother to many children, including two current children, Jimmy Schaffer and Leroy Mickens. Her husband, Bobby and son, Eddie preceded her in death in 2005 and 1994, respectively. She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother Rosa B. Johnson of Bedford; daughters, Sherry Northern (Harold Chico) of Mount Vernon, NY, Angela Trent, Sandra Kay Butler (Mike), both of Bedford and Donna Woodbury (Ashley) of Newport News, Va. Grandchildren, Chad Northern, Elyse Northern, Dana Williams, Bobby Butler, Vashawn Trent, Tonya Trent, Derek Trent, Germaine Stevenson, Shelette Butler, Ralim Butler, Jamaal Butler, Asia Butler, Darius Butler and Ashon Woodbury; thirteen great grandchildren, sister- in- law, Edna B. Hayden, two special nieces, Margaret Hayden Lees (David) and Carolyn Hayden Johnson (Harrison), lifelong friends, Samuel and Gertrude Jones, companion, Lorenza Coles and a host of loving cousins, other relatives and friends. Sylvia, a warm, kind and cheerful woman who enjoyed life, was admired for her generosity to all. She will be remembered for her huge heart and sincere desire to help others.
