On July 18, 2014, the Lord called one of His steadfast believers home. Steve Vincent Payne, Sr. was born March 18, 1953 in Bedford, Virginia. He joined Oakmulgee Baptist Church at an early age where he sang in the choir during his younger years. His faith saw him through many trying times including dealing with health issues. Many people were touched by the positive attitude he had in the face of adversity. It was a testimony of God's presence and love in his life. Steve knew despite any mistakes, he was loved unconditionally by his Savior. He lived his life to the fullest, appreciated each day, loved his family and gave the Lord praise in all circumstances. Steve spent many years as an employee of Rubatex Corp. He also worked at Country Cooking and later at the Huddle House. In addition to cooking, Steve enjoyed watching wrestling, westerns, and football. Back in the day, he was known to "cut a rug" and loved to attend drag races. The eldest brother among his siblings, Steve made sure he looked out for others. Although he only had one grandchild, he had many "little buddies' that he would shower with kindness, love, seeds of faith, and of course - candy! Steve is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lucy Payne; aunts, Cora Burrell, Lillie Hopkins, Virginia Payne; brother, Donald Payne, and cousin, Barry Payne. He is survived by a daughter, Janice Payne; a son, Steve Payne, Jr; his number one buddy, grandson, Justin Wade. In addition, he is survived by siblings, Joyce Wells of Cleveland, OH, Deacon Michael Payne (Cheryl), Troy Payne (Teresa Wood), both of Bedford, VA; Charles Payne (Debbie) of Madison Heights, VA, and Sandra Bow (Terry) of Los Angeles, CA, and a host of other relatives and friends who share in our loss.
