Obituary

Robert Lincoln Morgan, Sr. departed this life on early Sunday morning, November 20, 2011. God granted him the desires of his heart by allowing him to live his final days in the comfort of his home. He was born in Bedford County on April 18, 1922 to Mr. & Mrs. John (Lizzie Drew) Morgan. He was the youngest of nine children. Robert received his early education in Bedford County; was married to Elizabeth Drew in 1939 until her death; served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 and received an Honorable Discharge as a Steward's Mate First Class; married Dorothy Mae Leggett in 1946; resided in West Virginia until the early 1950's then returned to Virginia and lived in Bedford until the date of his death. Robert was a long time and faithful member here at Mount Zion Baptist Church. He was spiritually influenced by Reverend Walter Branchfield and Reverend Johnny Drew and Deacons William Carper, Herman Forrest and Samuel Hall. He served close to 50 years as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon Board Chairman and Trustee. His favorite songs were The Old Account Settled Long Ago, Jesus is Real to Me, and Glory Glory Hallelujah (Since I Laid My Burdens Down). His favorite bible verse was John 14:2 "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." He possessed strong leadership qualities, was a man of his word, and was known to have a tight gripping hand shake. Even though he had a type "A" personality, his soft spot and sense of humor were frequently apparent. His most common phrases he would used to express dissatisfaction were "well blow me down" and "dog dead." With the room temperature set no lower than at 80 degrees (regardless of the season), he enjoyed relaxing in his lounge chair with a church fan while snacking and watching TV. His favorite sports teams were the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Redskins. Besides watching televised sports, he enjoyed watching Westerns, reruns of Matlock, Law and Order, and In the Heat of the Night. He also liked watching Dr. Phil, Dancing With The Stars, WSET News and ABC News. He also enjoyed reading the Bible and the Roanoke Times. His favorite foods were ice cream and anything else edible (especially if it was well seasoned and sometimes cooked beyond recognition). As a graduate from the US Navy Cooks and Bakers School, his culinary skills were developed during his time in the service and enhanced while he was employed at Bluefield College and Bluefield State College as a cook. He was certainly no stranger in the kitchen. His most recent specialty was homemade bread pudding. He retired from the Moneta Dress Factory as Shipping and Receiving Clerk in 1986. During his employment years, he stayed busy with cutting, selling and burning wood; planting gigantic vegetable gardens; raising hogs and selling hams, sausage and yams. However, (as some of us know) his painting and carpentry skills had much to be desired. In his prime he was a force to be reckoned with when it came to playing horse shoes and checkers, then in his latter years dominoes became his main game. He also enjoyed fishing with his friends Deacons Isaac Nelms and Linc Mayo. He was called Robert, Daddy, Granddaddy, Uncle, Cousin and Friend by some; and others referred to him as Mr. Robert, Deacon Morgan or Mr. Morgan. He is survived by daughter Margaret (Ben) English of Roanoke, Virginia; daughter Gwendolyn Daniels of Camden, New Jersey; daughter Starlet (Allen) Wilder of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter Robin (Wil aka Butch) Hall of Moneta, Virginia; former wife Dorothy Morgan of Jacksonville, Florida; son-in-law Rev. John Miller of Mechanicsville, Virginia; daughter-in-law Maureen Morgan of Bronx, New York; an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, plus many friends and neighbors.
