Oscar Lewis
Otey, Sr.
Feb 14, 1926 — Dec 23, 2016
Nothing can ever take away, the love a heart holds dear;
Fond memories linger every day, remembrance keeps him near.
Oscar Lewis Otey, Sr. departed this life Friday, December, 23, 2016. He was born on February14, 1926 to the late Danner and Annie Richie Otey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Oscar Otey, Jr., a grandson, Michael Douglas Harris; three sisters, Margaret Christen, Vinni Boxley and Beatrice Reynolds; and three brothers, Clayton Otey, Joseph Otey, and Irvin Otey.
He joined the Reed Creek Baptist Church at an early age. He served as a Trustee for many years. On June 2, 1952, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mable Burnett Johnson; and to this union seven children were born.
Oscar's passion was his vegetable garden, which he maintained for many years. He loved his family and his home. There were many times when his children would try to coax him into going on a family vacation. His response was always the same, "I think I will stay here this time."
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He had the ability to create a song from a short conversation. This is something his children will truly miss. He will be fondly remembered as a shy and quiet man, but his close friends and family will remember his humorous and witty ways. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Mable J. Otey; six children, Phyllis Ann Harris, Peggy O'Neal Brown (Kent), Francine Burnett White (Wesley), Kathy Delores Harris (Clifford), Fay Wanda Bryant (Todd), and Troy Vinson Otey; twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; three sisters, Edith Bolling of Lynchburg, VA, Evelyn Johnson of Philadelphia, PA, and Jimmy Otey of Roanoke, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Wednesday
