Mary Lee Sledd Ware Spinner, age 110, the daughter of the late William Y. and Fannie C. Sledd, was born February 20, 1901 in Big Island, Virginia. She departed this life on October 21, 2011 in Oakwood Manor Health and Rehabilitation in Bedford, VA. Mary was married to the late James Houston Ware and from this union they were blessed with two loving daughters, Lucille L. and Vera D. Her husband, Houston died in 1960 and later she married Henry Spinner, who died in 1986. She became a Christian in October 1910 at the age of nine. Her acceptance of Jesus as her Lord and Savior came at Reed Creek Baptist Church, a dramatic experience that she recounted many times throughout her life. She joined Sharon Baptist Church where she was a faithful member and kept her membership there until death. She worked in the church wherever she was called upon. For thirty years she taught the Beginner's Sunday School Class and served on the Usher Board for 33 years. Living a Christian life was a serious matter for Mary. She loved God and lived her life as a devout follower of Him. Loving, caring, and showing kindness was manifested throughout her years in relationships with others. She was happy to help people who needed her assistance. Whatever she had, whether little or much, she would share with those in need. Communing with God through devotional time - reading the Bible, praying and singing, was an important part of her day. Being submissive to God's will was of upmost importance to her, readily expressing that and reminding others to do so, too. Mary, who was also known as "Momma Mary", "Sister Moe", "Mother Mary", and "Cousin Mary" lived most of her long life in Big Island. She loved her home and longed to be there while away. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality. Going to her house for many was like coming home because she made people feel welcome and comfortable. In addition to being preceded in death by her parents and husbands, her brothers and sisters, William Sledd, Gertrude Hutchings, James Sledd, Robert Sledd, Hortense Irvine, Hubert Sledd, Elbridge Sledd, Myrtle Reynolds, and Lottie Johnson also predeceased her. Mary leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Lucille Ware and Vera Ware Browne, a devoted son-in-law, Kaj Browne all of Jamaica, NY, stepsons, William Spinner (Jean) of Big Island, VA and Charles Spinner of Washington, D.C.; many nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
