Obituary

Mr. Lorenza Coles Sr., a strong man of faith, a devoted family man, and a gentle soul with a heart full of love, entered eternal rest Friday April 18, 2025 at home with his family after a life marked by kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear.

Lorenza was one of ten children born in Bedford County Virginia to the late William Dennis Coles and Catherine Burrell Coles. Raised in a close-knit family grounded in faith and hard work, Lorenza carried those values with him throughout his life, becoming a steady and faithful presence to everyone blessed to know him. In addition to his parents, Lorenza was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Saunders Coles, with whom he shared many cherished years. He was also preceded by his son Timothy Ray Coles, and brothers Wilbert, Israel, and Odell Coles.

Lorenza's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a proud believer and active worshipper, often seen with a tambourine in hand, keeping rhythm to the songs of praise he loved so much. He found deep joy in listening to gospel music—especially on his cherished cassette tapes—which filled his home and heart with peace and praise. His love for the Lord was not only heard in music but seen in the way he lived—humble, patient, and full of grace. Lorenza dedicated over thirty years of service to the City of Bedford and was known to many as a man who could fix anything. Lorenza enjoyed singing in the choir, fishing, hunting and gardening.

He leaves to celebrate his life and legacy: his devoted son, Lorenza Coles Jr., and "daughter in love" Leah, who he welcomed and loved as his own - his granddaughters: Jasmine Alderman (Drew) and Sharice (Derek); a grandson, Timothy Ray Hall; and his great-grandchildren: Xavier, JayJay, Kadyn, Kyngston, Lennox, and Memphis.

Lorenza is also survived by his brothers Roger, Nathaniel, and John, and sisters Betty Mae Jackson, Nearlean Tanner, and Virginia Robinson. He shared a close bond with many nieces and nephews, especially Gaye Coles and Sandra Robinson, who held a special place in his heart.
