Obituary

Early Wednesday morning, February 12, 2025, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, Lewis "Skip" Miller, Jr. transitioned to his heavenly home at the age of 79.  He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 17, 1945 to the late Lewis Iverson Miller, Sr. and Goldie Mayo Miller.  Although he grew up and went to school in Philadelphia, Skip loved working summers in Lynchburg, Virginia at two places his Aunt Florence Mayo owned, "Happy Land Lake" and "The Canteen."   He and his cousin Wendell Harrison often worked in both places.

Skip defied all odds and always bounced back from many hurdles in life.  Skip had Epilepsy which rendered him disabled with life-long seizures, many falls, serious burns, and various other health conditions.

When his dad retired, the three Millers moved to Rustburg, Virginia where they hosted family gatherings and visited other family members.  They attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Bedford, Virginia for years.  Skip was employed at the Sheltered Workshop of Altavista where he developed hobbies, which included painting and drawing.  One of his winter scene drawings was featured in a 1987 calendar in Altavista.  Other hobbies included fishing, chess (at an earlier age he taught his younger cousins how to play); he also played chess on his computer as an adult.  He gave his cousins Black History flash cards to "supplement their education."  Skip enjoyed traveling with his mom, Goldie in the states and abroad.

After his parents had passed, Skip stayed with his long-time caretaker, Doris Clark, for several years before she became ill in 2021.  He moved to the Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Doris' daughter, Janice Marshall, looked after Skip after her mother passed in 2023.  Both treated Skip like family!   Doris and Skip were members of Cross Road Baptist Church in Evington, Virginia, pastored by Rev. William Coleman.

Skip was a loyal Philadelphia Eagles fan.  He was able to watch his Eagles win Superbowl LIX (February 9, 2025) against the Kansas City Chiefs.  Go Eagles!

He remained cheerful and appreciative of people's acts of kindness.  He was very polite and pleasant to be around.  He was always glad to receive visitors.  He will be dearly missed.

Skip leaves to cherish his memory several cousins including Dolores Johns, Bryan Johns, Deborah Johns Moir, Linda Johns Ashford, Lawrence Johns, Anthony Johns, Edward "Andre" Johns, Wendell Harrison, Al Harper, Jr. and several other family members.
