Obituary

Kenneth Lee Spinner, Sr. departed this life peacefully in Bedford, Virginia on Friday, March 14, 2025, and went home to be with the Lord. He was born November 5, 1945, to the late Archie Spinner and Verlie Mae Thompson and stepfather Van Thompson. His grandfather, John P. Wright gave him the nickname "Pooch" and he was also affectionately known as "KenLee". In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Harold Dewey Spinner, Carol Elaine Spinner, Ida Gail Scott, Doris "Peaches" Callaham and James Glenn Spinner.

Kenneth's life story truly paints a picture of someone who embraced the strength of family, the power of faith and the value of determination. Graduating from Susie G. Gibson High School, he forged a lasting bond with the Brothers Five, consisting of himself, Harold Spinner, John Franklin Spinner, Sr., Samuel Wade, and George Hurt, Sr. Their unbreakable friendship would last a lifetime. After graduation, he embarked on a journey initiated by his Uncle Bossie (Odell Wright) when he moved to Washington, D.C., and later Maryland. This move started with a job in construction work to a long, successful career at Safeway. As a master meat cutter, Kenneth was promoted to the position of Meat Department Manager, which he was very proud of. He also enjoyed playing on the company's softball team for many years. Upon retiring from Safeway, Kenneth's return to Bedford landed him a job at Golden West Foods where he continued to value his mission of hard work and dedicated service.

Kenneth loved fishing, baseball, cars - and especially took pride in his cherished green Chevelle back in the day, and he loved watching the Washington Redskins/Commanders. These were not just hobbies and pastimes—they were ways for him to find peace. Nothing meant more to him than the people in his life and his faith—those two pillars that gave his life both purpose and meaning.

Kenneth joined Otterville Baptist Church at an early age. He especially loved coming to the annual homecoming services at Otterville – bringing the large pans of food that his dear mother had prepared for the day. He also attended services often at Lovely Zion Baptist Church in recent years. His testimony, so full of gratitude, was about how God took him from the lowest moments of his life to a man who lived with an unwavering recognition of God's grace and goodness. His words, "I want to thank the Lord for waking me up to see another day," showed his profound sense of thankfulness for life itself—a life he knew was a gift. The humility in his statement, "I am a sinner saved by grace," reflected his heart of gratitude, and the lines from his testimony, "One day at a time sweet Jesus, that is all that I ask of you," revealed the way he lived—one day at a time, trusting God's guidance. His declaration, "If anybody ask you just who I am – tell them I am redeemed," embodied his confidence in his faith and the redemption he found through God's love.

Kenneth's legacy of love, faith, and humility will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His presence will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life, his testimony, and his example of grace will continue to inspire those who knew him. He was honorably named "Our Hero".

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, whom he loved dearly, Kenneth L. Spinner, Jr. and Kelvin Spinner (Tanisha), both of Maryland; grandchildren, Breon Spinner and Keara Jacobs, Talaya Esquilin (Dante), Takeya Johnson (Lester), Taneka and Tameya, great grandchildren, Mason, Cameron, Chaz, Chelsea, Izreal, Elias, Amiya, Alona, Eden, Mason, and Milan. He is also survived by his devoted brother and caregiver who tirelessly and diligently took extremely good care of him, Larry W. Spinner (Gail Bryant), other siblings, Cecil Spinner (Annette), Archie Spinner (Karen), Vanessa Martinez (Jerry), Annette Robertson (Tyrone), David Thompson, many loving nieces and nephews, his special cousins that are like his siblings, Janis, Gregory, Debra, Karen, Robin, Crystal, Tammy, and Sylvia; a trusted and devoted friend, Gloria Preston, many other relatives and friends.
