John D. Martin, age 90, also known as "Uncle Bud", was the youngest son of the late William H. and Jimmie Martin. Bud was the last of the Martin children, and now he has gone on to join his parents, and 2 brothers, William (Buck) Martin, Joseph Martin, and 3 sisters, Loretta Bonds, Mary Jane Burwell, and Martha "Lucille" Whitten in the Holy Land. Bud received his education from the Bedford County school system. With the help of his sister Loretta (Sis), Bud left the area at the age of 16, relocated to Washington, D.C., and began working as a construction worker. There he met his wife, Bernice Martin and together they raised six children, Ronald, Joseph, Jackie, LaVerne, Jerry, and Vickey. Bud could often be found sitting on his front porch scratching his lottery tickets or enjoying a daily walk to the corner store to play his numbers. He also enjoyed watching soap operas with his good friend Smokey (the cat) while eating sweets. Anyone that was familiar with his routine, knew that you did not call him during those hours. About three years ago, Bud decided to return home to Moneta, VA. Upon his return to Moneta, he enjoy spending time and having neighborhood cookouts with his nieces, nephews and the numerous friends that he made once he returned. Bud often told the story of how every time he came to Moneta he would get red mud on his shoes, and reminisced about how his sister, Loretta (Sis) helped him "put his clothes in a sack" when he decided that he was leaving home. He also enjoyed talking about how far his brother Buck could throw a rock. Bud was a man who was full of life, and loved his family. He left his mark on anyone who came in contact with him. "Uncle Bud" Martin will be missed greatly by his family and friends. He is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Davis and Vickey Martin; two sons, Jerome Martin and Ronald Robinson, twenty grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends including a special friend, Glenda Russell.
