Mr. James Alexander Johnson, age 78, of Bedford, Virginia, peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2026. He was born on January 20, 1948, to the late Samuel Henry Johnson, Sr. and Bessie Creasey Johnson.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his two brothers, Samuel Henry Johnson, Jr. and Howard Johnson; and his two sisters, Elizabeth Holt and Frances Smith.

James accepted Christ into his life at an early age and remained steadfast in his faith until his passing. He was educated in the Bedford County School System and attended Susie G. Gibson High School. James was proudly employed at Bunker Hill for more than thirty years until its closure. Following its closure, he continued his career with the Bedford Parks and Recreation Department, where he was employed for many years.

James enjoyed spending time outdoors and had a deep appreciation for gardening, hunting, cutting wood, and riding his moped and four-wheeler. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life and cherished the time he spent doing the things he loved.

During his time as a patient at Oakwood Rehabilitation Center, James formed many new friendships and developed a special love for playing bingo. He was a kind and gentle spirit who loved everyone he encountered and touched the lives of many through his warmth and compassion.

James leaves to cherish his memory five sisters: Odessa Flood, Barbara Smith, Joyce Johnson, and Thelma (Clyde) Patterson, all of Bedford, Virginia; and Brenda Smith of Rocky Mount, Virginia; two brothers, Charles (Sylvia) Johnson of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Lorenzo (Carol) Johnson of Thaxton, Virginia. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
