Obituary

JAMES WILLIAM CAMPBELL, departed this earth Saturday afternoon, September 24, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Lewis Gale Hospital surrounded by his family. His journey began in Bedford, VA on November 17, 1934. He was the first child born to the late George W. Campbell and Clara Coles Campbell. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by one grandson, Clarence Edward Goff and a nephew, Donald Jones. James' early childhood education was in the Bedford County School System. James was first married to Viola Tanner and to this union three children were born: Clarence, Janice and Thomas. He was later wed to the late Ruby Carlton, who had one daughter, Denise. His surviving wife is Juanita Wright, who has two daughters, Debora and Lisa. James was raised in a Christian home by God-fearing parents who taught him the value of hard work. James worked as a mechanic and held several other jobs in the Roanoke area before moving to New York where he worked for the Board of Education. He retired and returned to Roanoke and continued to work as a mechanic. He went on to establish his own lawn care business. James was a "Jack of all Trades" and could fix anything. James joined Jerusalem Baptist Church when he relocated to Roanoke where he was a faithful member, and was active in Bible Study and Sunday School. James' skills at "manicuring" lawns were taken with great pride, and he and his partner, Walter Brown did excellent work together. In addition to his lawn care business, James had a passion for working with his cousin, Ronnie Miller, in the funeral business. He was a loyal and dedicated employee of the former Roanoke Funeral Home on Melrose Ave. and later became a faithful staff member of the Bedford Funeral Home. James and Ronnie's relationship was strong until his death. James enjoyed life, and loved his family and friends. James was diagnosed with cancer and endured various forms of treatment for several years, but he never complained. He had a strong but quiet spirit and will be greatly missed. Left to honor his memory are his wife, Juanita, two sons, Clarence Campbell, Deacon Thomas (Deaconess Shirley) Campbell, one daughter, Janice Blake; three stepdaughters, Denise Carlton, Debora Henderson, and Lisa Taylor, six grandchildren, six step grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his mother, Deaconess Clara Campbell, brother, Joe (Christeen) Campbell, sister, Beverly Jean (James) Carter, three aunts, Mary L. Mitchell, Deaconess Thelma Murphy, and Deaconess Ruby Campbell, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
