George Franklin
Miller
Jun 2, 1933 — Jan 5, 2022
Pittsburgh
George Franklin Miller answered God's call on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 from his home of nearly 60 years. He was born June 2, 1933, to the late Walter and Blanche Miller in Bedford, VA. He was the youngest of six siblings. George graduated from Bedford Training School in 1951. Upon graduation, he moved to Washington, DC.
George served his country honorably in the United States Army in 1953 during the Korean War. He joined US Air (former Allegheny Airlines) in 1952 where he worked for 38 years and eventually became Foreman of the Stock Room and then Foreman of the Ground Support Equipment Maintenance. He was the first African American to hold both these positions. He believed in and fought for civil rights for African Americans.
In 1954, he was wedded to Anna May Jackson. They lived in Washington, DC and moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1963. From this union, they were blessed with two children and though they divorced in 2004, they remained close friends until her passing in 2016.
He married Dorothy Mason in 2007 and they lived in Pittsburgh, PA. Their love of travel and music took them to various fun places including Hawaii and New Orleans; as well as Blues festivals in Chicago. Dorothy's family warmly embraced George with love.
George was an excellent cook and gardener. He loved cars and was a skilled mechanic. He kept his 1972 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight in tip-top condition and it remains on the road today. George enjoyed listening to the Blues (especially B. B. King) and watching Boxing, Football, and Western Movies. He loved working with his hands; he even built a house in Virginia in his youth; and he could fix just about anything. He excelled at home repairs and enjoyed keeping a green manicured lawn. He also was an accomplished tailor and stylish gentleman. He had been a member of the White Lily Baptist Church since 1963. He served the Lord on the Usher Board and used his gifts as he climbed tall ladders to help paint the sanctuary in the original building. George loved to drive and he enjoyed driving back to his home town in Bedford, VA to visit with family and friends. He had a heartfelt connection to the Otterville Baptist Church and often returned for the annual Rallies (Homecomings).
He was preceded in death by brothers Earl, Jack, Walter, Sonnie, Fletcher, and Frank Miller, and sister Elizabeth "Jettie" Wright.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Miller; a son Earl Miller (Ramona) and daughter Teresa Miller Tucker (Carl), granddaughter Angelica Miller, all of Pittsburgh; step-daughter Taunya Wright (Doug), step-granddaughters Alanna and Taryn Wright; sisters-in-law Carolyn Woodley, Michelle Wynfield, Donna Rolland, Cynthia Howell, and Cheryl Howell all of Port Huron, MI; and brother-in-law Antonio Murphy of New York, NY. He is also survived by many loving of nieces, including eldest niece Mary "Ann" Miller, and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
