Obituary

On Monday, December 30, 2024, GOD chose to call George Robert Hurt, Jr. from labor to his home in the sky. George was born June 26, 1967, to George R. Hurt, Sr. and Harriett Nellum Hurt. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents William and Ludie Hurt and maternal grandparents Leroy Nellum, Sr., and Virginia Nellum Miller.

George was a faithful member of Otterville Baptist Church where he participated in the Brotherhood Club and sang on the Men's Chorus.

He was educated in the Bedford County School system where he was an outstanding athlete at Jefferson Forest High School class of 1986. He played on the baseball, basketball, and football teams. In football he was a 1985 All-District. He set a school record with 256 yards rushing in a single game. His basketball personal milestone was his senior year he had his first dunk in a basketball game against Brookville.

After high school he played football at Ferrum College then for Lynchburg Storms. He coached Little Leagues soccer, baseball, and basketball for eleven years. He worked for the C.O.A refereeing Association where he umpired baseball, refereed basketball, and football for over twenty years. George had a kind and soft heart. He was always willing to help, and he was always looking for the good in a person. It was nothing to see him explain to a child how to play a game and why the foul was called on them. He loved children and children loved him.

George worked for Country Cookin' for several years where he was able to share his cooking skills. He was employed at Piedmont Label – later named Smyth for over thirty years where he was promoted to a Supervisory position until his health failed him.

He was a member of the Big Island Masonic Lodge 316.

He is survived by the love of his life and devoted primary caregiver Tammy Emerson. Two sons Joshua DiNardo daughter in law Kelly DiNardo and Anthony Hurt daughter in law Emma Hurt. Six grandchildren Jaxon, Reign, Phoenix, TJ, Aspen and Cameron. His loving parents George R. Hurt, Sr. and Harriett N. Hurt. Two brothers Barry Hurt, Sr. (Luanne) and Quinton Hurt, one sister Konya C. White (Gilbert) and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
