Everett Vaughn
Miller
Apr 24, 1933 — Jul 7, 2016
On Thursday, July 7, 2016 Everett V. Miller died at his residence on Wilson Street in Bedford, VA. He was born in Roanoke, VA on April 24, 1933 to the late Stephen M. Miller and Eula Woods Miller. He was also preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister.
Everett was baptized and joined Reed Street Baptist Church in Vinton and later became a member of Washington St. Baptist Church. He was educated in Roanoke where he graduated in 1951 from Lucy Addison High School. He was very proud of being the recipient of the first B'nai B'rith Award for Roanoke Valley. He attended Morgan State College, but soon left to join the United States Air Force "to see the world".
He served in the occupation of Germany, Libya's 7 Day War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was stationed at the Pentagon and worked with the officers who manned the first astronauts. In Japan, he worked at the American Embassy. After his retirement from the Air Force, he earned a degree from National Business College. He worked there as a Job Developer; organized a Gospel Chorus that gave concerts in Virginia and North Carolina. He managed Eckerd Drug Stores in Lynchburg and Madison Heights and worked at Legal Aid and O.D.C. He ended his job adventures by working for Rubatex and Norfolk Southern Railroad.
Everett loved to play the piano, and after his "2nd retirement", he played for several churches including Washington St. Jr. Choir, Antioch (Peaksville) Sr. Choir, Lovely Zion Gospel Chorus and several others. He played until his health prevented his continuing.
Everett was a loving, devoted and faithful husband, father and friend that deeply cared for his family and his classmates from Lucy Addison's Class of 1951. He always cherished the time he spent with his family and classmates.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife of 53 years, Mary D. Miller; daughter Claudester "Wendy" Miller, both of Bedford, VA; granddaughter Meredith B. Bell of Philadelphia, PA; goddaughter, Mary E. Dawson of Houston, TX; sister, Vera Bartee of Montclair, NJ; brother-in-law, Harry G. Dawson (Beatrice) of Suitland, MD; niece, Renee C. Dawson of Stockbridge, GA; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
"A helping hand to all he knew;
He was so kind, generous and true
On earth, he nobly did his best;
Grant him Jesus heavenly rest."
"Peace be thy rest dear Everett,
It is sweet to breathe thy name,
As in life we loved you dearly,
So in death, we do the same."
