Elmore James
Read
Feb 8, 1941 — Oct 15, 2020
Lynchburg
Early in the still quiet hours of October 15 th God's servant Elmore James Read completed his earthly assignment and peacefully went home to be with the Lord. His journey began in Bedford county on February 8, 1941 when he became the first of nine children born to Almore and Edna Read. His Christian discipleship began at the St. John Baptist church in Forest, Virginia, and continued throughout his life. Upon completion of his early education he continued his life pursuits in Atlantic City, New Jersey. While there he was employed as a professional driver for a tour bus company, and the bulk of his working career was spent at Kramer Beverage. After forty years of employment his retirement led him to return home.
He reconnected with his church family as a faithful member serving on the hospitality committee and as the President of the usher board. He was generous with his gifts, serving in churches throughout the community whenever and wherever there was a need.
James was a soft-spoken gentleman with a quick smile, making friends easily. Many of his buddies simply called him 'Read.' On May 24, 2014 he married Frances Nettles and she lovingly refers to him as 'Jimmy.'
His legacy is a large and loving family. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by three brothers: Thomas, Howard, Alvin and his only sister, Cora. Joining his wife to cherish their memories of him are his daughter Patricia and her brother Brian, New Jersey, stepchildren Cynthia Davis, Lee Anthony Williams, both of New Jersey, brothers Lawrence, Rev. Albert (Patricia), Arthur (Peggy), David (Nancy), adopted sister Barbara Anderson, and very special friends George and Denise Davis.
A large host of extended family and friends will be grieving as well, and we join in unity as we pray God's peace to sustain us during this time.
Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty;
Neither do I exercise myself in great matters,
Or in things too high for me.
